"The Fleas They Carried" A Relief Anthology

Announcing the publication of “The Fleas They Carried: Animal Aid Anthology.” It is now (finally!) available on Lulu in both electronic (.pdf) and paperback (A5, perfect bound). Many thanks to the contributing authors:

Jetse de Vries
Jennifer Brozek
Michael Merriam
Michael Stone
Eugie Foster
Diane Payne
and Michael Jasper (who is a 2X contributor to Relief Anthology)

ALL proceeds from “The Fleas They Carried” will be donated to reputable shelter and rescue groups that have been hit hardest by environmental disasters. The editor will be matching (out of his own pocket) dollar-for-dollar (within reason now, don’t break the bank) and donating matched funds to the ongoing efforts involved with the 600 dogs that were rescued from several puppy mills earlier this year in the PACNORWEST.

Thanks again to the authors for their donation of words to this cause. Stay tuned… there will be more coming from ReliefAnthology.com.

It’s coming.
We (I) are(am) horridly behind due to a severe LifeStorm that occured over the last few months. The “Winter” Pet Relief Anthology will be released here within the next week, and I will then call for submissions for the Spring and Summer anthologies and shift those dates accordingly. Life happens, thank you for understanding.

I want to congratulate the authors who donated their gift of words for the Iowa Flood Relief Anthology (Winter 2008). Proceeds from Cornstalk Gypsies were used as a donation to a school in Ottumwa, IA — part of the flood affected regions in that great state. Here’s a letter I received in my inbox earlier:

Dear ReliefAnthology.com,

“Dynamic Geometry Equals Dynamic Students” (at http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=206139) is now becoming a reality for the students of Mrs. Fischels, with the help of a Double Your Impact grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. You can expect feedback on this proposal by 06/01/2009. In the meantime, Mrs. Fischels wrote you this note:

Dear ReliefAnthology.com,

On behalf of the students at Ottumwa High School, I would like to thank you for your generous donation to help us purchase technology that enriches the classroom experience. We will immediately use the ELMO TT-02S Visual Presenter when it arrives! Please know that we especially appreciate your assistance in these financially troubled times. Your donation could not have come at a better time, considering mid-year budget cuts have already been announced. Thank you for helping our rural school district with technology improvements! Sincerely, Mrs. F

Sincerely,

The DonorsChoose.org Team

I watched the deadline to meet donations for the first project come and go over the holidays. It was a long-shot project that seemed to gain a little attention, but in the end it was not the little train that could. I immediately found another project that was in the flood-affected regions of Iowa to donate to. This particular project is also being backed by funding from a grant given to DonorsChoose.org by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This means DonorsChoose.org will match dollar for dollar any donation that you apply towards this cause.

Go ahead, check it out, lend a hand…and a buck or two.

I believe in the power of words.
I started Relief Anthology this summer as a response to the massive floods that the state of Iowa sustained in late May and early June. I felt like a helpless bystander as fellow Americans struggled to save their homes and businesses.
I noticed however, that I wasn’t alone in my feelings of uselessness. My friends, associates, and partners in crime in the auctorial communities wanted to do something to help Iowa as well. They wanted to give, to do something, but with the economy beginning to spiral (downward) we were all a bit inundated with our own personal finances to make a donation of modest enough proportions to impact flood relief efforts.
So we wrote and gave a gift of words.
Cornstalk Gypsies
Today marks the first donation from ReliefAntholog.com to the public.
As I looked for either a charitable organization or a relief effort that was specific to our cause I came across the Donors Choose website. I found an awesome teacher with an awesome proposal: she wants to inspire her 3rd through 5th graders to write.
Mrs. W of Lincoln Elementary School in Waterloo, IA … we’re all about kids writing.
Mrs. W still needs $728.00 dollars to see her proposal fulfilled. $728.00 might seem like a lot of money in these tough economic times…but if you donate and tell 5 people, and they tell 5 people…and they each tell 5 people…
… then we might just be able to help provide the resources needed to inspire the next generation of SFF writers.
